Located at 291 Carmel Avenue in Marina, California, Bojuka Ryu has operated on the Monterey Peninsula for over 55 years. The system was founded by Shihan Eddie G. Stewart, who based the discipline on his training in boxing, Japanese jujitsu, judo, and karate. In 2001, students organized to construct a dedicated dojo facility, and in 2002 Stewart appointed Sensei Eddie Nakao as head instructor. Sensei Eddie Nakao holds a 7th-degree black belt in Bojuka Ryu and a 4th-degree black belt in judo through the United States Judo Federation. Sensei Janine serves as head instructor for Botan Joshi Judo Kai, directing the women's judo programs and competition coaching following an athletic background as a four-time Senior National Champion and Pan American Games silver medalist. Instruction spans Bojuka self-defense, competition judo, and conditioning sessions. Youth judo classes welcome students ages six and up to build physical stamina and technique foundations, while adult practitioners engage in self-protection, fitness training, and tournament preparation under guided practice.
