Checkmat Corona BJJ is located at 211 Dupont St, Unit 101 in Corona, California. According to the academy, "Corona Jiu-Jitsu was founded by black belt champion Jimmy Tat in 2014." Tat started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2004 under Koji Murakami in Montreal before relocating to California, joining Team Checkmat, and establishing the local training center alongside co-founder Cindy Almonte. The academy provides gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs for adults and children. Training emphasizes fundamental self-defense, ground fighting leverage, positional control, and submission mechanics such as joint locks and chokeholds. Members prepare for both recreational martial arts practice and sport grappling competition circuits. Daily training sessions follow an established instructional format. Standard adult practices include "10 to 15 minutes of warm-up drills, then followed by 20 to 25 minutes of techniques" and conclude with active sparring against live partners in a monitored environment. Classes are held throughout the week at the Corona facility.
