Gracie Jiu Jitsu Athens, AL - STREET READY Self Defense®️ is a certified training center located at 655 U.S. Highway 72 West in Athens, Alabama. Head instructor Paul Serwatka began studying Gracie Jiu Jitsu in 2000 at a Rorion Gracie Training Center in Chicago, Illinois. A retired career firefighter and paramedic, Serwatka also trained in boxing, Muay Thai, and wrestling before moving into martial arts instruction. The Athens training facility features 1100 square feet of high-density Zebra Athletics mats designed to absorb shock during takedowns, throws, and sparring. Training follows the structured curriculum developed by professors Rener and Ryron Gracie, emphasizing leverage and technique to neutralize aggression without relying on brute strength. Core adult instruction centers on Gracie Combatives, a foundational program covering thirty-six fundamental defensive techniques. Advanced students who graduate beyond combatives continue development in the Master Cycle program. Youth instruction is delivered through Gracie Bullyproof, while the Women Empowered program provides women-focused defense strategies.
