Hanabi Judo

Hanabi Judo is situated at 841 San Pablo Avenue in Albany, California. The school was founded in 1965 by Emilio “Mel” Augustine, a seventh-degree black belt who originally introduced judo to local youth as a probation officer. The academy’s Japanese name translates to “fireworks.” Today, the dojo is directed by Mel’s son, Dan Augustine, a sixth-degree black belt carrying forward six decades of continuous martial arts instruction. The curriculum centers on Kodokan Judo, emphasizing off-balancing techniques, throws, hold-downs, armlocks, and disciplined mat etiquette. The academy organizes developmental programs spanning toddler movement, youth judo fundamentals, and after-school enrichment alongside regular adult training. Students interested in competition can participate in Team Hanabi, preparing for local, regional, and national tournaments. Classes emphasize mutual respect, physical coordination, and character formation both on and off the mat. The dojo provides a supportive learning atmosphere for students of all backgrounds and ages.
