Island Jiu Jitsu Michigan

Island Jiu Jitsu Michigan delivers Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu education and competition training at 1649 W Sherman Blvd in Muskegon, Michigan. The academy provides martial arts instruction for children, teens, and adults across Muskegon and western Michigan. The school was established on May 1, 2016, by Head Coach Nick Jones, who began his grappling journey in 2009. Jones became West Michigan's first black belt on December 13, 2020, receiving his promotion from Island Jiu-Jitsu founder Jason Vigil of Atos Jiu-Jitsu at the organization's headquarters in Honolulu, Hawaii. Coaching is supported by purple belt Matt Jolman, who began training in 2011 and joined the academy in 2017, alongside tournament competitor Carmel. The academy frequently hosts guest seminars featuring world-title grapplers including JT Torres and Josh Hinger. Coursework encompasses adult gi and no-gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, competition preparation, and practical self-defense classes for all age groups. Training focuses on leverage, escapes, positional dominance, takedowns, and submission transitions.
