Lycan Jiu Jitsu and Self Defense is a martial arts school situated at 2905 Shattuck Ave in Berkeley, California, serving students from Berkeley and Oakland. The facility provides Gi and No-Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu along with striking classes for children, women, and adult practitioners across all skill brackets. The academy was founded by head coach Joseph Monroe, a U.S. Navy veteran and black belt promoted in 2019 who began training in 2007. Instruction is shared with black belt coach Ken Kim, who has practiced since 2012 and brings a background in competitive powerlifting to technical movement analysis on the mat. Training emphasizes practical leverage, weight distribution, and position control to neutralize larger opponents.
