Okinawa Karate Shōrin-Ryū

Okinawa Karate Shōrin-Ryū, operating as Lakewood Budo Kai, is a traditional Japanese martial arts dojo located at 4520 E. 23rd Street in Long Beach, California. The veteran-owned and operated school delivers classical martial arts instruction in empty-hand defense, grappling, and traditional weapons. The dojo was founded by Shihan Jim Kelton and is instructed by Sensei Russell Kelley, who serves as head instructor, alongside Shihan Jeffrey H. Smith and Sensei Jose Solorio. Training upholds samurai traditions, emphasizing mutual respect, rigorous martial etiquette, and structured rank progression. Instruction encompasses Matsubayashi Shōrin-Ryū Karate and Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. Classes are divided into age-appropriate curricula, including children self-defense classes for ages 6 to 12, as well as teen and adult karate and jujitsu classes for students ages 13 and older, teaching strikes, joint locks, escapes, throws, and chokes.
