David Stegman is the owner and head instructor of Seattle Jiu-Jitsu Academy, which he co-owns with Matt White. A 5th degree black belt, he has trained in martial arts for more than 30 years, earning black belts in Tae Kwon Do and Ni-Goju Karate before turning exclusively to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1996. He received his black belt from Carlos Machado in 2006, and his lineage runs Kano, Mitsuyo Maeda, Carlos Gracie Sr., Carlos Machado, Stegman. Competing in the Masters divisions, he has won multiple gold medals at events including Fight 2 Win, the World Masters Championships, the U.S. Open, the Pan-American and Grappling Industries. He has built the academy's community in Seattle over more than a decade and has promoted several of its instructors, including Noah, who received his brown and black belts from him.
