Jake Matthew Mapes

Jake Mapes is the founder and head instructor of North Coast Jiu Jitsu in Vista. He received his black belt in September 2009 from Luis Heredia, a 6th-degree black belt under Rickson Gracie, with whom he began training on Maui; the academy lists him as both a 3rd and a 4th degree black belt. Mapes was drafted by the Los Angeles Angels and later the San Francisco Giants, playing three years in the Giants' minor league system before turning to jiu-jitsu. As a brown belt he took bronze at the IBJJF Worlds in 2008 and 2009 and won the absolute and his weight division at the 2009 IBJJF US Nationals. After his black belt he built an undefeated professional MMA record, retiring in 2014 to teach at The Arena MMA in San Diego, and has been a combatives instructor for the Navy Special Forces for over seven years.
