John Carlquist is co-owner, instructor and program manager at Unified Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in South Jordan, Utah, which he leads together with James Gardner; the two have more than 50 years of combined training and teaching experience. He began Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the late 1990s at Master Pedro Sauer's State Street academy, having practiced other martial arts throughout his life, and was eventually made an assistant instructor there. He earned his black belt in 2006, the year Unified opened with a group of five Pedro Sauer black belts. Over more than twenty years of competing nationally and internationally, his results at black belt include multiple IBJJF International Open titles, three American National championships, a Pan American championship and a No-Gi World championship.
