Jose Gomes is the founder of Carlson Gracie Jiu Jitsu New Zealand, which he officially established in Queenstown in 2014, and a third-degree black belt. Born and raised in Curitiba, Brazil, he began his jiu-jitsu journey in 1996 under Rodrigo Zanon. When he opened the doors of the Carlson Gracie New Zealand academy in Queenstown, the club started with around 15 people and has since grown to more than 200 members. Several of the academy's other instructors have trained with him, including black belt Ashley Smith, who has trained under Gomes at Carlson Gracie NZ since the end of 2011. The academy also runs classes in Wānaka, Invercargill and South Canterbury.
