José Humberto Tavares Soares
Humberto Tavares, listed in the IBJJF directory as José Humberto Tavares Soares, is the creator and leader of Equipe Corpo & Mente, the Jiu-Jitsu team headquartered in the Sobradinho district of Feira de Santana, Bahia, and holds a 7th degree black belt. Born on 13 May 1964 at Fazenda Cacimba de Cima in the municipality of Sertânia, Pernambuco, he is Pernambucano by origin. According to the team's own history, its founding academy opened on 1 July 1986 on Rua Gonçalo Alves, across from the Joia da Princesa municipal stadium, after training partner Joselito Sá, then a fellow SESI judo athlete, proposed opening a gym together. The team's philosophy treats Jiu-Jitsu as a way of life and holds that good combat requires the union of spirit, technique and body. Corpo & Mente now lists affiliated academies across Bahia and other Brazilian states as well as in Argentina, Bolivia, Spain and Nicaragua.
