Kevin James Gonzalez, known as Professor "KJ," is the owner, founder, and head instructor of Checkmat Knoxville. A third-degree Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt who has trained for more than 20 years, he opened the academy as part of the Checkmat organization founded by Leo Vieira in 2008. His competition record includes multiple world titles and a BJJ No Gi Absolute World Championship. Beyond regular classes he runs women's self-defense workshops and bully-prevention courses for children. As a licensed CCW Protective Agent he also trains law enforcement officers in non-lethal control tactics that subdue threats while respecting civil liberties.
