Pedro Sauer is an eighth-degree coral belt and the head of the Pedro Sauer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Association, a network of more than 150 affiliated academies headquartered at One Spirit Martial Arts in Herndon, Virginia. Born and raised in Rio de Janeiro, he began boxing at five and later took up judo and taekwondo. At fifteen his friend Rickson Gracie invited him to train jiu-jitsu with Rickson's younger brother Royler, and he started the next day. Sauer received his black belt in 1985 and in 1986 was awarded the Técnico de Jiu-Jitsu certificate directly by Helio Gracie. He studied economics and business administration and spent eleven years as a stockbroker before moving to the United States in 1990 to teach full time. He settled in Utah, helped establish Brazilian jiu-jitsu in the American Southwest, and relocated to Northern Virginia in 2005. He is a certified instructor under Rickson Gracie.
