Rodrigo Carvalho is the founder of AKXE BJJ USA Academy in Agoura Hills, California, and holds a fifth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with more than thirty years in the art. Born in Rio de Janeiro, he began training at age eleven under Octavio Couto ("Ratinho") and Vinicius Campelo, and his lineage runs from Carlos and Hélio Gracie through Rickson Gracie, Marcelo Behring, Campelo and Couto. As a competitor Carvalho was a three-time Brazilian state champion and a NAGA black belt champion. In 2007 he introduced Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Slovenia and neighboring parts of Croatia and northern Italy, and in 2011 Bas Rutten invited him to the United States to head the jiu-jitsu program at his Southern California gym. He also founded Fight For A Kid, a non-profit that supports underprivileged young athletes in Brazil.
