Ron Manes is the founder of Kobukan Martial Arts, which he established in 2008 in Virginia Beach to offer advanced Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instruction to students from his other programs; the academy relocated to the Norfolk area in 2011 and now calls Bennett's Corner home. Manes began his martial arts journey at age four and holds black belts in both Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, and he has managed several martial arts schools over more than 23 years. A retired Navy combat veteran, father of eight and Stage 3 throat cancer survivor, he draws on that experience to teach students of all ages. Beyond the dojo he teaches Tai Chi at the local community center and public libraries, and through martial arts he mentors youth, supports veterans and partners with charities.
