Spencer Hewitt is the head coach at Checkmat Essex, based at Origin MMA Academy in Rainham. A third degree Checkmat black belt, he teaches under the mentorship of Ricardo "Ricardinho" Vieira, who leads the Checkmat academy with his brother Leozinho Vieira. Hewitt is a retired professional MMA fighter who held the CFC flyweight and UCMMA interim bantamweight titles and fought for Cage Warriors, Bellator and BAMMA. In no-gi jiu-jitsu he was European black belt champion in 2022 and 2023, American National champion in 2022, World silver medallist in 2022 and Pan American champion in 2025. His focus is now on coaching and developing new BJJ and MMA talent at the academy.
