Stephan Goyne is the founder and head instructor of Bay Jiu-Jitsu, where he holds a third-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He has trained and competed in the art since 1998 and received his black belt in 2010 after winning gold medals at brown belt in tournaments including the IBJJF American Nationals, East Coast NAGA and the American Cup. He later added SAMBO and Combat Wrestling to his training and won the FICW Masters World Championship in 2016. Before jiu-jitsu Goyne tried Aikido, Krav Maga, Arnis and Jeet Kune Do, and he worked as an elementary school teacher while training. Drawing on his years as a certified classroom teacher in Oakland and as a youth gymnastics coach, he developed his own model for teaching jiu-jitsu to children. Several of the academy's coaches, including Cassidee Moser and Tim, earned their black belts under him.
