Thalison Soares is the head coach of The Academy Byron Bay. He grew up in the Brazilian Amazon, far from any jiu-jitsu mat, and went on to become an IBJJF World Champion at black belt, winning across every belt on the way up while learning from some of the leading coaches in the sport. Rather than settling in one of the established jiu-jitsu hubs, Soares brought his career to Byron Bay, which at the time had no elite BJJ scene, and built The Academy from the ground up rather than importing a franchise. The school's structured curriculum, covering guard, passing, takedowns, submissions and escapes, is a system he developed over his years of competing, and it is taught the same way by every coach at every level.
