Adam Schmaltz is the owner and head instructor of Mission Grappling Club (MGC) in San Marcos, where he has lived from preschool through raising his own family. His path into Jiu Jitsu and Judo began in 2002 with BJJ instructional tapes from a garage sale and afternoons grappling with friends on makeshift mats; in 2005 he began formal lessons at a club, and by 2009 he was teaching part-time as a purple belt. He earned black belts in both Judo and Jiu Jitsu in 2012. Schmaltz studied kinesiology and went on to graduate work in motor control focused on learning novel tasks, and he draws on Jiu Jitsu, Judo and wrestling, sport science, motor learning, physical education and youth development in his coaching. After managing a large Jiu Jitsu gym in San Marcos, he opened MGC to provide goal-oriented grappling training to the community.
