Asa Russell is co-owner and a black belt instructor at Carlson Gracie Wine Country Jiu Jitsu, holding a first-degree black belt under Tom Cronin. A retired Marine, he trained under several instructors across 25 years of service and changing duty stations: he received his blue belt from Vitor Ribeiro, his purple belt from Gustavo Machado while training daily under Nicholas Walters, and his brown and black belts under Ricardo Guimaraes. He describes himself as a student first and keeps working to expand his own technique. Since his blue belt days he has volunteered nearly as many hours coaching kids' classes as he has spent training himself, and his teaching centers on fundamental instruction for adults and children in a safe, positive setting.
