Michio Grubbs is the head professor and owner of Excel Martial Arts Academy in Oceanside, California, and an IBJJF-certified fourth-degree black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He began BJJ under Roy Harris in 1999 and received his black belt from Chris Haueter in 2009. He has since promoted his own black belts, including Laurynn Garcia in December 2023 and Eric Charriere in 2023. A personal fitness trainer and strength and conditioning coach with more than 20 years of teaching experience, he is also a former IFBB professional bodybuilder who competed from 1994 to 1998. As a Jiu Jitsu competitor he won his division at the 2012 IBJJF Masters World Championships, and he has trained in folkstyle, freestyle, and Greco-Roman wrestling as well as Judo, Karate, and MMA. He teaches most of the academy's kids and adult Jiu Jitsu classes and runs the competition team.
