Professor Rafael Ramos is a co-founder of Gracie Barra Encinitas, which he opened in 2005 together with Master Nelson Monteiro, and a 5th degree black belt. He began training at age 13 under Master Carlos Gracie Jr. at the original Gracie Barra school in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and earned his black belt under him, learning on the same mats as many of the sport's best instructors and fighters. As a competitor, Ramos won and placed at major events including multiple Brazilian Nationals, the Rio de Janeiro State Championship, the Brazilian Team championship and the Pan American. Today he sees his main mission as passing on to students the techniques accumulated over a lifetime of training under Carlos Gracie Jr., and he maintains close ties to the Gracie Barra academy where he served his apprenticeship.
